Tannic Acid, CAS No. 1401-55-4.

The application history of Tannic acid can be regarded as a history of human wisdom evolution. As early as 2000 BC, the ancient Egyptians discovered that bark extracts could make animal hides flexible and durable, which was the earliest "vegetable tanning" technology. In the modern leather industry, Tannic acid remains a core raw material for high-end leather production. In emerging technological fields, scientists use its super coordination ability to prepare intelligent coatings with antibacterial and self-repairing functions. In the water treatment field, Tannic acid-based adsorbents can efficiently remove heavy metal ions. In the pharmaceutical field, Tannic acid has natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory abilities. It can not only slow down cell aging and oxidative damage but also regulate the expression of inflammatory factors, showing potential therapeutic value for inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and ulcerative colitis.

(1)Clarify the Purpose

Due to different application scenarios, the quality requirements for Tannic acid vary significantly. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify the purpose first and then screen targeted. For example, in the food or health product field, attention should be paid to safety, water solubility, taste, etc. In the pharmaceutical field, it is necessary to check whether the product complies with the pharmacopoeia standards, with key considerations on indicators such as purity and impurities. In the industrial field, focus on tanning performance, cost-effectiveness, and other indicators.

(2)Understand the Test Report

High-quality Tannic acid must meet the following key indicators (take Sinobio’s food grade Tannic acid as an example):

Test Item

Premium Standard

Test Significance

Tannic Acid Content

≥90% (HPLC method)

The content directly reflects the purity, and impurities (such as sugars and pigments) will affect the taste and stability.

Gallic Acid Content

≤3%

Gallic acid is a hydrolysis product of Tannic acid. Excessive content will lead to sharp astringency and may accelerate oxidation.

Heavy Metals (Lead)

≤2ppm

Exceeding the standard may harm the liver and kidneys.

Arsenic Content

≤1ppm

It reflects the environmental safety of the raw material origin, and raw materials from industrial polluted areas are prone to exceed the standard.

Water Solubility

Clear and transparent (1% aqueous solution)

Less impurities mean good water solubility, and turbidity may contain insoluble substances such as cellulose and pectin.

PH Value

3.0-5.0 (1% aqueous solution)

Too strong acidity may irritate the mucous membrane and affect the stability of food formulas.

(3)Natural Raw Materials

The raw material source of Tannic acid directly determines its quality. For Tannic acid produced in China, gallnuts, oak bark, and grape skins are preferred as raw materials. Gallnuts contain 50%-70% Tannic acid, which is a globally recognized raw material for high-purity Tannic acid. Tannic acid produced from oak bark is suitable for industrial tanning, and the resulting leather is soft and wear-resistant. Grape skins contain oligomeric tannins and resveratrol, which have antioxidant activity and are widely used in functional foods and health products. Sinobio's products are all extracted from plants.

(4)Strict Quality Control

*Smell: Natural Tannic acid has a light plant fragrance, while synthetic products may have chemical odors.

*Color: Food-grade Tannic acid should be light yellow to reddish-brown powder. Too dark color may indicate oxidation or rough processing technology. (provide you with pictures of Sinobio products for your reference.

*Dissolution Test: Take a small amount and dissolve it in warm water. A high-quality Tannic acid solution is clear, while inferior products may be turbid or have precipitates.

*Sample Testing: Request samples from suppliers and entrust third-party testing to focus on verifying the content, impurities, and heavy metals.
