Sinobio Paraformaldehyde 96% Powder

Paraformaldehyde (CAS number 30525-89-4) is a solid polymer of formaldehyde. Its chemical formula is typically (CH₂O)n (where n is between 6 and 100). It is a white amorphous solid at room temperature with a formaldehyde odor. The following is a detailed description:

Physical Properties

Appearance: White crystalline powder or granular solid.

Density: Approximately 0.88-1.45 g/cm³ (values vary depending on conditions).

Melting Point: 120-170°C (depending on the degree of polymerization).

Solubility:

-Slightly soluble in cold water, dissolves rapidly in hot water.

-Insoluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether.

-Readily soluble in dilute acid and alkali solutions.

Stability: Stable at room temperature, but decomposes upon heating or exposure to strong acids or alkalis, releasing formaldehyde gas.

Chemical Properties

*Depolymerization: Paraformaldehyde depolymerizes to monomeric formaldehyde under heating or alkaline conditions, making it a convenient form of formaldehyde for storage and transportation.

*Reactivity: As a source of formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde can participate in a variety of organic synthesis reactions, such as the preparation of resins, adhesives, and paper reinforcements.

Paraformaldehyde, a polymer of formaldehyde with a white crystalline or powdered appearance, plays a pivotal role in multiple industrial and pharmaceutical fields due to its chemical reactivity and functional versatility. Its primary application lies in the production and application of herbicides—it serves as a key raw material in synthesizing certain herbicide active ingredients, helping control the growth of unwanted weeds in agricultural lands, lawns, and non-crop areas, thereby safeguarding the growth of target crops or maintaining the tidiness of green spaces.

Beyond agricultural use, paraformaldehyde is a critical component in the manufacture of synthetic resins and adhesives. In synthetic resin production, it reacts with other monomers (such as phenol, urea, or melamine) to form resins like phenol-formaldehyde resin and urea-formaldehyde resin. These resins are further processed into artificial horn products (used in making costume jewelry, decorative handles, or vintage-style accessories) and artificial ivory (applied in crafting imitation ivory carvings, billiard balls, or piano keys) due to their excellent moldability, hardness, and texture similar to natural materials. In adhesive production, it is used to prepare wood adhesives, which are widely used in furniture manufacturing, plywood processing, and wood-based panel production to ensure strong bonding between wood components.

In the pharmaceutical sector, paraformaldehyde has dual applications. On one hand, it acts as an active ingredient in contraceptive creams—it exerts a spermicidal effect by altering the external structure of sperm, thereby helping prevent unintended pregnancy when used as directed. On the other hand, it is employed in pharmaceutical processing, such as in the synthesis of certain pharmaceutical intermediates or the disinfection of pharmaceutical production equipment and environments to meet strict hygiene standards in drug manufacturing.

Additionally, paraformaldehyde is valued for its strong disinfection and pest-control properties. It is commonly used for disinfecting clothing and bedding, especially in healthcare facilities (like hospitals, clinics) or public accommodation spaces (such as hotels, hostels), effectively eliminating pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and fungi on fabric surfaces to reduce the risk of cross-infection. Moreover, it functions as a fumigant disinfectant, fungicide, and insecticide: as a fumigant, it releases formaldehyde gas when heated, which can penetrate enclosed spaces (such as warehouses, grain depots, or laboratory chambers) to disinfect the environment and stored items; as a fungicide, it inhibits the growth and reproduction of molds on materials like wood, leather, or textiles; as an insecticide, it can kill pests such as mites, cockroaches, and stored-grain insects, protecting stored goods from pest damage.
