Butralin Herbicide Application

Butralin, also known as N-sec-butyl-4-tert-butyl-2,6-dinitroaniline (IUPAC name), is a widely used dinitroaniline herbicide. Below is a detailed introduction to its application:

Main Uses

Butralin is primarily used as a pre-emergence herbicide to control annual broad-leaved weeds and grasses in various crops, including cotton, soybeans, rice, barley, beans, alliums, vines, ornamentals, and orchards of fruit and nut trees. It is effective at doses ranging from 1.12 to 3.4 kg active ingredient per hectare, depending on soil type. Additionally, it can be used to control suckers on tobacco plants at a dose of 125 mg per plant.

Mechanism of Action

After entering the plant body, Butralin primarily inhibits cell division in the meristematic tissue, thereby inhibiting the growth of weed seedlings and roots, leading to the death of the weeds. It is a selective herbicide that is absorbed by germinating seedlings and slowly translocated acropetally. It also acts as a growth regulator, suppressing the growth of shoots, branches, and suckers.

Storage Conditions

Butralin should be stored in a cool, dry place to maintain its stability and effectiveness. The recommended storage temperature for the powder form is -20°C for up to 3 years or 4°C for up to 2 years. When stored in a solvent, it should be kept at -80°C for up to 6 months or -20°C for up to 1 month.

Solubility and Formulation

Butralin has varying solubility in different solvents. For instance, its solubility in water is 1 mg/L at 24°C, while in DMSO, it is 60 mg/mL (203.16 mM). This information is crucial for formulating the herbicide into a suitable solution for application. Once formulated, the solution should be stored under appropriate conditions to avoid degradation.

Safety Considerations

Although Butralin is relatively low in toxicity, it should still be handled with caution to avoid exposure to skin, eyes, or inhalation. It is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety precautions when using this herbicide.

Environmental Impact

Like any pesticide, Butralin can have potential environmental impacts if not used responsibly. It is important to apply it according to label instructions to minimize its impact on non-target organisms and the environment.

In summary, Butralin is a versatile and effective herbicide with a wide range of applications in agriculture. When used correctly, it can help farmers manage weeds and improve crop yields. However, it is important to follow safety precautions and environmental guidelines to ensure its responsible use.
