Glycolic acid, CH20HCOOH, also known as hydroxyacetic acid, is composed of colorless deliquescent leaflets that decompose at approximately 78° C (172 OF). It is soluble in water, alcohol, and ether. Glycolic acid is used in dyeing, tanning, electropolishing, and in foodstuffs. It is produced by oxidizing glycol with dilute nitric acid.
Glyoxalic acid can be used in the synthesis of a variety of reactions. Glyoxylic acid is used in the Hopkins-Cole reaction, which is used in the detection of tryptophan in proteins. It reacts with phen0l to get 4-hydroxy mandelic acid, which on further reaction with amm0nia gives hydroxyphenylglycine, as a precursor to the drug amoxicillin. It is also used as a starting material for the preparation of 4-hydroxyphenyl acetic acid, which is used to get atenolol.
