Sodium Molybdate CAS 7631-95-0 is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula MoNa2O4 and molecular weight of 205.92. The following is a detailed description:


Physical Properties

Appearance: white rhombic crystal or powder, glossy.

Density: 3.78 g/cm³ (25℃).

Melting point: 687°C.

Solubility: slightly soluble in cold water, easily soluble in hot water, insoluble in acetone.

Properties of aqueous solution: weakly alkaline, pH about 9.0-10.0.

Stability: stable at room temperature, loses water of crystallization at 100℃.


Chemical Properties

Reactivity:

Reacts with strong acids to precipitate molybdic acid (H₂MoO₄).

With heavy metal salts (such as copper sulfate, barium sulfate, etc.) to produce insoluble precipitates (such as BaMoO₄ white precipitate).

Redox properties: Sodium molybdate itself is not a strong oxidizing agent, but can participate in redox reactions under specific conditions.

Sodium Molybdate Application:


1. Agriculture:

*Molybdenum fertilizer: Molybdenum is an essential trace element for plant growth and is involved in the process of nitrogen metabolism. Sodium molybdate can promote the activity of rhizobium, improve the efficiency of nitrogen uptake, and significantly increase the yield and quality of legume crops (e.g., soybeans, cauliflower).

*Mechanism of action:

-Promotes nitrate reductase activity, accelerates the conversion of nitrate to nitrite, which in turn synthesizes amino acids and proteins.

-Enhances chlorophyll synthesis and improves photosynthetic efficiency.

-Enhance crop resistance (e.g. cold and disease resistance).

*Corrosion inhibitor: used in pollution-free cooling water systems to inhibit metal corrosion. Often used in combination with polyphosphates, gluconates, zinc salts, etc., to reduce the dosage and improve the effect.
