Appearance: white or slightly yellow amorphous short fibrous powder, odorless, tasteless, easy to absorb moisture.

Solubility: soluble in water, soluble in formic acid, formaldehyde, dimethyl sulfone, dimethyl formamide, dimethyl acetamide and a few other polar solvents, partially soluble or stretched and dissolved in butyraldehyde and acetic acid, insoluble in general organic solvents.


Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is a nonionic, water-soluble polymer with the chemical formula [C₆H₇O₂(OH)₂OC₂H₄OH]ₙ. It appears as a white or slightly yellow amorphous short fibrous powder, odorless and tasteless, and flows easily. HEC is soluble in cold and hot water, insoluble in most organic solvents, and exhibits minimal viscosity change within a pH range of 2-12. It also demonstrates excellent salt resistance and thermal stability.



Preparation Method


HEC was prepared from cellulose by alkalization with sodium hydroxide and etherification reaction with ethylene oxide. The specific steps are as follows:


1. Soak the raw material cotton shorts or refined meal pulp in 30% liquid alkali, and take out and press after half an hour.

2. Pressing to the alkali water ratio of 1:2.8, for crushing.

3. pulverized alkali cellulose into the reactor, closed, vacuum, nitrogen, repeat the vacuum nitrogen will be completely replaced by the kettle air.

4. pressed into the pre-cooled ethylene oxide liquid, the reaction kettle jacket into the cooling water, control about 25 ℃ reaction 2h, get hydroxyethyl cellulose crude.

5. Crude washed with alcohol, add acetic acid neutralization to pH4-6, then add glyoxal crosslinking aging.

6. Wash with water, centrifugal dehydration, drying, grinding, to get hydroxyethyl cellulose.
