PHMB is best known for its broad-spectrum antimicrobial and antifungal activity. It is the standard of care for treatment of Acanthamoeba keratitis and an ingredient in multipurpose contact lens solutions, such as Renu (Bauch & Lomb, Rochester, NY). PHMB is a cationic disinfectant that is effective against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria through its electrostatic interaction with negative sites on the lipopolysaccharide component of bacterial cell membranes.
PHMB is recognized as the safest and most efficient broad-spectrum antibacterial agent in the 21st century. It is colorless and tasteless, with low inhibitory concentration, fast action speed and low foam content. It can form a layer of cations on the surface of articles to inhibit bacteria for a long time, and will not cause the formation of antibacterial bacteria. It is widely used in medical devices, public environment, household, fabrics, food, milk, and nursing products.

Polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride (PHMB) has been widely used in medicine as a bactericidal preservative. Used as a medical product for disinfecting contact lenses, eye drops, and surgical procedures. Due to the strong tolerance of PHMB to the eye, it can be used as a treatment of Acanthamoeba keratitis, prevention and treatment of other eye diseases, and PHMB is also widely used in cosmetics, personal care products, textiles, food industry and other Chemicalbook. With the development of science and technology, polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride has many new applications.
