Appearance: white or slightly yellow amorphous short fibrous powder, odorless, tasteless, easy to absorb moisture.

Solubility: soluble in water, soluble in formic acid, formaldehyde, dimethyl sulfone, dimethyl formamide, dimethyl acetamide and a few other polar solvents, partially soluble or stretched and dissolved in butyraldehyde and acetic acid, insoluble in general organic solvents.

Stability: HEC does not ionize in water, has good acid and alkali resistance, and does not react with heavy metals to produce precipitation. At pH<3, HEC will acidify and make the viscosity of aqueous solution decrease; under the action of strong alkali, HEC will undergo oxidative degradation and make the viscosity of its aqueous solution decrease due to the action of heat and light; it is stable in the range of pH 6.5~8.0.



Preparation Method


HEC was prepared from cellulose by alkalization with sodium hydroxide and etherification reaction with ethylene oxide. The specific steps are as follows:


1. Soak the raw material cotton shorts or refined meal pulp in 30% liquid alkali, and take out and press after half an hour.

2. Pressing to the alkali water ratio of 1:2.8, for crushing.

3. pulverized alkali cellulose into the reactor, closed, vacuum, nitrogen, repeat the vacuum nitrogen will be completely replaced by the kettle air.

4. pressed into the pre-cooled ethylene oxide liquid, the reaction kettle jacket into the cooling water, control about 25 ℃ reaction 2h, get hydroxyethyl cellulose crude.

5. Crude washed with alcohol, add acetic acid neutralization to pH4-6, then add glyoxal crosslinking aging.

6. Wash with water, centrifugal dehydration, drying, grinding, to get hydroxyethyl cellulose.

HEC Application


HEC has the properties of thickening, suspending, bonding, emulsifying, dispersing, retaining moisture and protecting colloids, etc. It can prepare solutions with different viscosity ranges and is widely used in the following fields:


1. Textile industry: used for sizing of yarn and fabric materials to increase abrasion resistance, dyeing, flame resistance, stain resistance, etc.

2. Daily chemical industry: used as thickening agent, emulsifier, adhesive, film-forming agent, etc. It is widely used in shampoo, shower gel, moisturizer, hairspray and other products.

3. Coating industry: as a nonionic surfactant, it can make the viscosity of emulsion products stable, reduce caking, and make the paint film smooth and flat.

4. Plastic industry: used in the synthesis of polymer, and other polymer synthetic fiber composite reinforcing materials, widely used in electronics, automotive industry.

5. Construction industry: used as additives for concrete, adhesive tiles and embedded joints to improve the viscosity of construction materials.

6. Petroleum extraction: used as drilling, completion and cementing additives, as a thickening stabilizer with good thickening effect, strong and stable sand suspension capacity, heat resistance, high salt capacity, low pipeline resistance, low liquid loss, fast glue breaking and low residue.

7. Pharmaceutical industry: used as thickening agent for tablet coating, excipient and liquid pharmaceutical industry.

8.  Agriculture: used as grass seed binding agent and seed treatment and pesticide suspension emulsifier.
