Magnesium hydroxide is prepared by various methods, mainly including:
1. Chemical precipitation method:
* Brine-lime method: the purified brine reacts with milk of lime to generate magnesium hydroxide precipitation, and the product is obtained after filtration, washing and drying.
* Brine - ammonia method: ammonia as a precipitant, and brine reaction to generate magnesium hydroxide, the subsequent steps are similar to brine - lime method.
*Magnesium nitrate method: mix magnesium nitrate solution with sodium hydroxide solution to produce magnesium hydroxide precipitate.
2. Physical method:
* Ore calcination hydration method: calcination of magnesite to generate magnesium oxide, and then react with water to generate magnesium hydroxide.
*Physical crushing method: directly crushing and grinding of magnesite and other ores to get magnesium hydroxide products.
3. Other methods:
*Hydrothermal method: under high temperature and pressure, magnesium oxide reacts with water to generate nano-sized magnesium hydroxide.
* Dolomite calcination method: after calcining dolomite, magnesium hydroxide is prepared by acid leaching and precipitation reaction.
*Antacids: used to relieve stomach pain, heartburn and other symptoms caused by excessive stomach acid, commonly found in drugs such as aluminium-magnesium plus suspension.
*Laxative: soften the faeces by absorbing water, assisting in the treatment of constipation.
*Magnesium hydroxide is an excellent flame retardant, widely used in plastics, rubber, coatings and other polymer materials. Its flame retardant mechanism includes:
-Absorbing heat during decomposition to reduce the surface temperature of the material.
-Releasing water vapour to dilute combustible gases.
-The generated magnesium oxide covers the surface of the material and isolates the oxygen.
* Flue gas desulphurisation: reacts with sulphur dioxide to generate magnesium sulphite, which is further oxidised to magnesium sulphate to achieve desulphurisation.
*Wastewater treatment: as a neutralising agent for acid-containing wastewater, replacing caustic soda and lime, reducing treatment costs.
*Oil additives: used as anticorrosion and desulphurisation agent to extend the service life of oil.
*Electronic industry: used in the manufacture of electronic components and insulating materials.
*Sugar refining: adsorb impurities in the sugar solution to improve the purity of sugar.
*Insulation materials: use its thermal stability to prepare high-temperature-resistant insulation materials.
*Agriculture: as magnesium fertiliser, supplementing the magnesium in the soil and promoting plant growth.
